Der Text ist in hiera­tischer Schrift sowie neu­ägypti­scher Sprache geschrie­ben und ledig­lich im Papy­rus Moskau 120 über­liefert. Die Hand­lung spielt in der Über­gangs­­zeit vom Neuen Reich zur Dritten Zwischen­zeit (ca. 1075 v. Chr.) und spiegelt die dama­lige politi­sche Situa­tion sehr gut wider, wes­halb sie auch manch­mal als histori­sche Quelle heran­­gezo­gen wurde. Die Erzäh­lung berich­tet vom Tempel­­beam­ten Wena­mun, der ausgesandt wird, um in Byblos Bau­holz für die Barke des Amun zu besor­gen. Wena­mun macht sich die Tjeker (ein Seevolk) zu Fein­den und gelangt mittel­los nach Byblos, wo er nicht will­kom­men ist. Er kann die gewünsch­ten Hölzer doch noch besor­gen. Auf der Heim­fahrt begeg­net er wieder den Tjekern, gerät auf der Flucht in einen Sturm und landet auf Zypern, worauf die Erzäh­lung abbricht.
