Be­kannt ist er vor allem durch seine freund­schaft­liche Bezie­hung zu Platon, durch die an­geb­lich von ihm erfun­dene flie­gende Taube und durch ein Gedanken­experi­ment, mit dem er die Unend­lich­keit des Uni­ver­sums bewei­sen wollte. Beson­deres Ge­wicht legte er auf die Mathe­matik als Grund­lagen­wissen­schaft. Seine bedeu­tendste mathe­mati­sche Leis­tung war die Lösung des Pro­blems der Ver­doppe­lung des Würfels. Zur musi­kali­schen Harmo­nie­lehre trug er mit seiner mathe­mati­schen Theorie har­moni­scher Inter­valle bei. Seine wissen­schaft­lichen Leis­tun­gen, von denen wegen der Spär­lich­keit der über­liefer­ten Anga­ben nur wenig bekannt ist, fanden in der anti­ken Nach­welt und bei moder­nen Wissen­schafts­histori­kern Anerkennung.
