Eu­ro­pä­i­sche Städ­te wie Ams­ter­dam, Bu­da­pest, Pa­ris oder Linz sind oh­ne Um­stei­gen er­reich­bar. Der Haupt­bahn­hof wird täg­lich von un­ge­fähr 335 Zü­gen der Deut­schen Bahn AG und der agi­lis (ag) be­dient, da­von 75 Fern­ver­kehrs- und 260 Re­gio­nal­zü­ge. Bereits zur Römer­zeit führte eine wichtige Verkehrs­verbindung, die Limes-Straße, durch das Bezirks­gebiet. Eine erste Besiedelung erfolgte im Mittel­alter, und 1179 wurde durch die Grün­dung eines Hospitals für Aussatz-Kranke die medizi­nische Tradition des Bezirkes begründet. Das Cellokonzert a-Moll op.129 ist das einzige Konzert, das Schumann nicht für einen konkreten Interpreten oder für eine Interpretin schrieb.  Es ist heute nicht weniger anspruchsvoll, die Rolle des Cellos nach wie vor schillernd, das Verhältnis zum Orchester heikel. Ungewöhnlich für ihn, der für seine drei anderen Sinfonien viel Mühe und Zeit verwendet hat. Aber diesmal, um 1850, läuft es ihm leicht von der Hand. Schumann ist glücklich, hat endlich eine Stelle als Dirigent in Düsseldorf bekommen, wo die Kunstinteressierten ihn und seine Frau Clara enthusiastisch empfangen. Und so erlebt er kurz nach dem Revolutionsjahr 1848 eine zweite schöpferische Euphorie. Die «Rheinische» hat ihren Titel nachträglich erhalten, dennoch passt er gut. Die Melodien wirken volkstümlich, die Instrumentierung ist brillant, und der feierliche vierte Satz kontrastiert effektvoll zur heiteren Stimmung der anderen vier Sätze. Die Tonart Es-Dur erinnert an Beethovens Eroica und zeugt von der Aufbruchstimmung des überzeugten Republikaners Schumann. Das Publikum liebt die «Rheinische» von Anfang an, auch heute hält ihre Popularität an, davon zeugen die unzähligen Aufnahmen.
