Die magistri militum gehörten zu den mächtigsten Männern im Römischen Reich. Seit Mitte des 4. Jahr­hunderts standen Heer­meister an der Spitze militäri­scher Sprengel­kommandos (die magisteria militum), die an den gefährdeten Grenz­regionen einge­rich­tet wurden. Aufgrund seiner hohen militäri­schen Stellung und Position im unmittel­baren Umfeld des Kaisers erlangte vor allem der oberste Heer­meister erheblichen politi­schen Einfluss. Mehrere Heer­meister verfolgten ehrgeizig eigene Ziele, wobei sie aber oft gleich­zeitig Reichs­interessen wahrten.
