Es handelt sich im Wesent­lichen um die Fund­bereiche Obi-Mazar/Lachuti und Chonako. Das Gebiet ist Teil der süd­tadschi­kischen Löss­land­schaft in der Afgha­nisch-Tadschi­kischen Depres­sion, welche von mehre­ren Hoch­gebir­gen wie dem Pamir und dem Hindu­kusch umgeben ist. In den Löss­wänden am Obi-Mazar sind zahl­reiche Boden­horizonte einge­bettet, deren Alter bis zu eine Million Jahre beträgt. Bei den meisten aufge­funde­nen Objek­ten handelt es sich um Stein­arte­fakte. Wäh­rend die unteren Böden bisher nur wenige Funde erbrach­ten, sind größere Fund­konzen­tratio­nen vom sechs­ten bis zum ersten Pedo­komplex dokumen­tiert. Sie umfas­sen einen Zeit­raum von vor rund 600.000 bis 100.000 Jahren, was dem Alt- und Mittel­paläolithi­kum ent­spricht. Das gebor­gene Fund­mate­rial der jewei­ligen Pedokom­plexe erlaubt einen Ver­gleich mit regiona­len und über­regiona­len Fund­stellen gleicher Zeitstellung.
